Now you can actually travel by private aircraft and care for the climate

Flightplan were the UK's first air charter company to offer clients the option to offset their flight Co2 emissions.

Flightplan have teamed up with the highly respected organisation Climate Care who commissioned the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University to produce a formulae for calculating the CO2 emissions of aircraft. Flightplan work with Climate Care to calculate the CO2 emissions of 'opted in' flights and offset these emissions by supporting the overseas (carbon sink) projects of Climate Care at the internationally agreed rate. By chartering through Flightplan, our clients can support this commitment and take a positive step towards reducing the environmental impact of their flight. Typical offset costs are between £18 and £27 per flying hour and a certificate is awarded to each contributing client, outlining the flight emissions that they have offset.

If I charter with Flightplan and offset my emissions, How credible is this carbon offset scheme?

The Kyoto Protocol, an agreement made under the 'United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change' has been adopted by 163 countries globally. The agreement has been signed and underwritten by the governments of these countries. The objective of the Protocol is for "stabilisation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent anthropogenic interference with the climate system". The Protocol recognises that global emission reductions can be achieved through the introduction of 'carbon sinks' and allows for carbon offset schemes through carefully chosen envrionmental projects and tree planting in developing countries. Such schemes also help reduce poverty and provide sustainable development in these countries. Flightplan selected Climate Care because they share our vision for a future where life goes on, developing and innovating technologically but always retaining an awareness and responsibility for our environment.

About Climate Care

Climate Care is a service that helps mankind to repair the damage that the day to day activities of our 21st century lives do to the climate. It does this by offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2 from these activities, by reducing an equivalent amount of CO2 on your behalf. These reductions are made through a range of projects in renewable energy and energy efficiency, which not only fight climate change but bring benefits to communities round the world. Climate Care have established an Environmental steering Committee, which includes eminent environmentalists and NGO's including Sir Crispin Tickell, David Aeron Thomas - Forum for the Future, Andrea Kaszewski - WWF, Professor Jeff Burley - Oxford Forestry Institute, John Ashton - Third Generation Environmentalist and Dr Steve Cobb - Climate Care Ltd. Together with Flightplan, many other businesses work with Climate Care, including British Gas, British Airways, BP, ABTA, Co-operative Group, Corporation of London, DEFRA, DTI, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Grant Thornton, Guardian Newspapers, HM Inspectorate, John Lewis Partnership, The Joseph Rowntree Trust, The Green party, Liberal Democrats, Powergen, Shell Russia, The Times and What Car.

Current projects include:

Restoring Rain Forests in Uganda

This is a rain forest restoration project in the Kibale National Park in Uganda. The project aims to recreate a rain forest canopy by planting and managing 30 species of local trees. The area is an important wildlife habitat - with one of the highest number of primate species in the world - and the project provides employment for local communities. Each Hectare of rainforest that is restored is expected to absorb 400 tonnes of CO2.

Renewable Power for Schools in India

This project is to introduce school stoves that run off a renewable fuel source, replacing stoves that use fossil fuel LPG. Crop waste is being used to make biomass briquettes for the stoves, providing extra income to farmers. For the schools, this is good news because the renewable fuel is cheaper. The stove has also proved popular with pupils, who prefer the taste of the food! This project is expected to save 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Efficient Stoves in Honduras

Climate Care is working in Honduras to make fuel efficient cooking stoves available in some of the poorest communities. This supports conservation by reducing the wood needed for cooking. It also benefits the householders by reducing smoke from the kitchen and dramatically cutting the health risk from wood smoke. Each stove reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 tonnes per year. This project is expected to save 7,000 tonnes of CO2.

This is a small sample of the very diverse range of projects which benefit from our carbon offset programme. To join us in putting something back into our environment, we invite you to contact us for a quotation and proposal the next time you need to charter an aircraft.
